Picture Guide showing chests:
Wolves; [link]
Selection of Dog Breeds; [link]

This took foever to do.. I didn't quite know how to tackle the Chest/back areas D:
Hopefully this is helpful..
If you find something you think I should change, please don't hesitate to tell me! n__n;;
I didn't really show how to draw the backs, just talked about the anatomy of them, because its a pretty straightforward thing to draw; you just need to know the anatomy.

I love how you put in there that wolves ears don't go back when they are snarling. That really help me. Well your whole tutorial did too. ^^

one question about the ear thing, the statement that you made that cartoonists made up the ears going back when they're angry and realisticly they would be pointing foreward. Do you think it would work if say.. the dog/wolf was frightened and was reacting out of anger for defense? like its cornered or wounded?

i mean, it doesnt seem too far fetched that cartoonists would simply make that up.. but do you suppose that maybe it could happen irl too given the circumstances?

im not stabbing your guide or anything, i was just curious on whether or not cartoonists were completely false on it..

either way, definately gonna take some notes on this one, real nice guide you got here :3

Well in the animal world fear and anger are two completely different things. A dog cornered and snarling is reacting out of fear, and will have the ears pinned back or forward depending on whether it's trying to be dominant or defensive/afraid. Some dogs may be dominant, pinned in a corner, with the ears up yes, but the ears up do not mean "I'm angry, don't come near me" but really mean something like "I'm wounded, but still dominant. Make one move and I will bite you". I'm not sure if I made any sense, but a dogs ears back mean submission; a dominant wolf won't put his ears back for "anger" reasons - because them down is relaying that he's submissive to whatever is threatening him. I suppose maybe it COULD happen, after all it's impossible to know for sure since they're dogs and can't tell us what they're feeling, but that's what I've observed over the years. I've never seen a dog cornered with their ears back that wasn't reacting out of fear, or a dominant dog putting them there.

Oh it doesn't seem farfetched to me; I understand why they do (and I do it too), but some people on deviantart pride themselves on being 100% realistic, so that little part was just for them xD Cartoonist give the dogs personality, and ears back, eyes narrowed (another part that's incorrect - wolves eyes widen when "angry") expresses to humans that the dog is angry, which is what cartoonists are concerned with.

yeah its hard being realistic while still trying to convey emotions as a cartoonist.. for me, i would probably go towards the human aspect simply because its humans that your entertaining or trying to express emotions to.. even if it is a failure at being realistic.. but hey, its fantasy.

either way, realism is a good thing to keep in mind, you just gotta find that little invisible line that they use to suspend peoples disbelief.. its tough.

this tutorial has some great info however, and i should probably take notes lol

That's how most are, and there's nothing wrong with it =) Like I said, I was only pointing it out for artists that try to be 100% realistic in their work.

Still trying to find that line, ha XD

Thank you =) I'm glad you found it useful. I'm in the process of continuing these :heart:

Hehe, I love exaggerating ears and belly-tucks in doodles or anything really. It always looks dramatic, but really, most of the time, I try to stick with a little more realistic look in that area.

Your ears always look amazing, so it was nice seeing how you draw them, ...but I still like drawing my ears.:)

As with all parts, style matters O: My tutorials are really only to teach anatomy; the kind of "know the rules before you break them" kind of thing. Just because it's in my tutorial doesn't mean you have to draw it that way |D;
